The National CAHPS Benchmarking Database 

The National CAHPS Benchmarking Database (the CAHPS Database) is the National repository for data from the CAHPS family of surveys. This database is an important resource for participating organizations, researchers, and others interested in using comparative CAHPS survey results and detailed benchmark data. Benchmark data are available for the CAHPS Health Plan Survey and CAHPS Hospital Survey. A new component is being developed for the Clinician & Group Survey.

The new CAHPS Database Online Reporting System is now available to view the 2009 comparative results for the Health Plan Survey Database.

CAHPS Health Plan Survey Component

The Health Plan Survey component has served as the core of the CAHPS Database since its inception in 1998. Since that time, hundreds of health plans, purchaser groups, State agencies, and others have participated in this component by submitting yearly results from the CAHPS Health Plan Survey.

CAHPS Hospital Survey Component

The Hospital Survey component of the CAHPS Database has existed since 2005. This component combines survey results voluntarily submitted by hospitals and their vendors over the period 2005-2007. Beginning in 2009, summary level Hospital Survey data will be obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for viewing on the online reporting system.

Clinician & Group Survey Component

The Clinician & Group Survey component is currently under development. Including this component will enable the CAHPS Database to provide comparative survey results and detailed benchmark data on patients' experiences with physicians and their office staff. The immediate goal of the database will be to provide preliminary benchmarks for early adopters of the survey.

Research Data Files

The CAHPS Database currently holds Health Plan Survey data from 2000 to present and Hospital Survey data from 2005 to present. Research data files are available for researchers upon approval of the research request by the CAHPS Database. Researchers must submit an application and receive approval by the CAHPS Database to access the research data files.

The CAHPS Database is one of the key resources for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's National Healthcare Quality Report and National Healthcare Disparities Reports. These annual documents are designed to support policymakers in monitoring the Nation's progress toward improved health care quality.
